INTERNATIONAL LAWYERS COMMEND FG’S COMMITMENT TOWARDS RETURN OF STOLEN ASSETS.

The Nigerian Institute of International Law (NSIL) rising from its 42nd Annual Conference held in Lagos recently, adopted that International law is not only at a cross roads but will continue to remain so, mainly for reasons of conflicting National interests.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the conference themed “is  international law at a cross road?” signed by the society’s general secretary Dr. Asikia Karibi-Whyte and made available to newsmen, the society commends the renewed effort of the Nigeria Government  through its agencies, such as ICPC, for championing the “Return of stolen Assets” crusade for Africa. A project which the NSIL pledges to support in it’s entirely.

The society of international legal minds also calls for more action to strengthen the United Nations Conventions against Transactional organized crimes stressing that parties to the convention should take necessary measures to enable confiscation of proceeds of crime derived from offences.

NSIL also frowned at the instance of subjugating international law to the whims and caprices of domestic interest, while agreeing that it is however not sufficient for Nigeria to have signed, ratified, domesticate various international law and treaties but should back it up with implementation, stressing that it is time to shift from negotiation to implementation of a normative legal order.
