Worried by continued killings, thuggery and other anti democratic tendencies which attends elections in Nigeria, former president Good luck Ebele Jonathan has said that the nation is not getting it right.
Speaking at the 17th convocation ceremony of the Igbinedion University, Okada, Jonathan said "by now, Nigeria should have outgrown turbulent conduct of elections" stressing that " no election worths the blood of a citizen".
The former president urged Nigerian youths to develop their own creative abilities aimed at self and national growth while appealing to politicians to desist from encouraging electoral violence as well as misdirecting the energy of Nigerian youths into thuggery.
He noted, with displeasure, that the incidence of violence during the elections held in Kogi and Bayelsa states showed that there was a fundamental problem with the nation's political system.
According to Jonathan "What happened in the last governorship elections in my state, Bayelsa, and Kogi State, where a woman was burnt alive in her house, is something that should not happen in any normal society. Something is fundamentally wrong with our political system."
Dr. Good luck Jonathan therefore called on relevant authorities to put machinery in motion aimed at stopping election induced violence on innocent Nigerians, " if our democracy must grow".
