EFCC TAKES EMPLOYMENT RACKETEERING SYNDICATE TO COURT IN KANO

By Esosa Omorogbe.

The Kano Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Wednesday, March 4, 2020 arraigned the duo of Comfort Obayemi and Lydia John before Honorable Justice  S. I Mark of the Federal High Court sitting in Kano on a six count charge of Obtaining Under False Pretense.

The defendants are alleged to have collected monies from unsuspecting members of the public under the pretext of getting them employment into National Task Force which upon diligent investigation clearly shows to be false and fraudulent.

One of the charge against the defendants read that ‘’You Comfort Obayemi, Lydia John and Kakari Sarki (now at large) sometime in February 2017, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court with intent to defraud conspired among yourselves to commit an illegal act to wit: Obtaining Money Under False Pretense contrary to section 8(a) and punishable under section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to all the charges read to them.

In view of the "not guilty" plea of the defendants, prosecution counsel, Odibo Gift requested the court for a trial date.

While the Counsel representing the defendants, Tajuddeen Shitu, applied for their  bail to which the prosecution counsel objected sighting anomalies in some of the paragraphs  contained in the motion.

Consequently, the defense counsel sought to strike out the paragraphs which the judge ordered should be formally and appropriately done.

Justice Mark then adjourned the matter to 9th March, 2020 for hearing of the bail application while the defendants were ordered to be remanded in Kano Medium Custodian Centre.
