EDO 2020 : REACTIONS TRAIL OBASEKI'S MOVEMENT INTO PDP . . . EVEN AS EDO COMPLETES THE SOUTH- SOUTH PDP CIRCLE.
By Mike ALADENIKA.
Governor Godwin OBASEKI of Edo State, Friday afternoon, laid to rest any doubt of where his next political direction would be, having resigned from the ruling APC where all efforts to secure a return ticket for his second term bid failed due to political intrigues which climaxed in his supposed disqualification.
With his resignation from the APC, governor Godwin OBASEKI consulted and networked with relevant stakeholders in Edo State, the South-South region and Nigeria with a view to fashion out a workable, and acceptable relationship that cuts across all strata in the interest of Edo People.
Many had thought, with the rangllings at the National Secretariat of APC, Governor OBASEKI may give his resignation from the APC a second thought.
But this opinion was short lived, as Edo state governor put paid to all speculations when he arrived the PDP SECRETARIAT in Benin city to formally perfect his membership of the PDP. An action, which now makes the South- South a complete home for PDP.
Prominent Nigerians have described Obaseki's deflection to PDP as a long awaited and welcome development.
Prominent among Nigerians who commended Governor OBASEKI move is the former NIGERIA'S vice- President, Atiku Abubakar, who congratulated Governor Godwin Obaseki, for joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying Edo State will be better for his choice
Alhaji Abubakar, in a statement issued by his Media Aide, Paul Ibe, in Abuja on Friday, welcomed Mr Obaseki to the PDP, which he described as “a truly people’s party.”
The PDP presidential candidate in the 2019 elections noted that Mr Obaseki was joining the PDP when the party was poised to deliver good governance to the people of Nigeria.
The former vice president said he was happy that Mr Obaseki finally exited the ruling party and joined a truly democratic party in Nigeria.
“I have no doubt that your coming into the PDP would further strengthen our party to mobilise the people behind the common cause of deepening democratic ethos in our country and restoring prosperity to our people.
“The PDP that you have come to join today is a reformed and repositioned party — one that lives by its name of being a truly democratic party.
“I have an unflinching conviction that your joining the party would be an asset to the PDP.
“Together, we can work to extinct every form of undemocratic tendencies in our body politic and realign the good people of Edo State to the moving train of democracy and restoration of good governance to the country”
To the former Governor of Anambra State and Vice Presidential candidate in the 2019 general election, Peter Obi, in his Tweeter handle "congratulates GovernorObaseki for joining the PDP."
Peter Obi said "Your movement is a step in the right direction to end the rascality in Edo politics, especially at this time when the country should focus on ways of amireloriting the huge suffering of Nigerians due to #COVID19 pandemic."
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, in his Tweeter handle wrote, "I welcome my brother, Governor Godwin Obaseki, to our great party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). As you join us on this platform, we shall work to ensure that you continue the great work that you have started for the people of Edo State."
