A socio-political group in Ondo State, the Ondo Liberation Movement (OLM), has tasked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to re-present its candidate in the 2016 governorship election, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), for the coming governorship election.
The group, in a statement by its coordinator, Mr. Dipo Ajidahun, hinged the request on the need for good governance in the state, noting that the people’s aspirations had not been fulfilled in the last three and half years.
The OLM stated, “We watch in total disappointment how some programmes of the past PDP government that cater for the welfare of the people have been cancelled under the present APC administration in the state.
“Before, health care for pregnant women, women in labour, nursing mothers, children and aged citizens, were free of charge; but now, those categories of people pay through the noses to get any attention.
“Before, school children glide in government-owned buses to school, to and fro, but now, many parents have to bear the cost of transportation and even pay exorbitant school fees on behalf of their children, under a hostile economic climate in Ondo State.
“Till date, we cannot point at any development in the lives of the people, as our youths graduate and keep roaming about the streets when there are a lot of programmes the government can embark on, to alleviate their suffering.
“We honestly do not know what the incumbent government is doing with the humongous federal allocations it has been collecting from the federation accounts in the last three and half years,” the group lamented.
It thus urged the PDP delegates coverging on Akure, the state's capital on July 22 to field again, Jegede, who had contested the election before and who enjoyed mass appeal because of his welfarist programmes.
“Besides, Jegede is a tested hand, as he was part of an administration that initiated all these good programmes which the incumbent had thrown overboard,” the OLM averred.
Meanwhile, the group has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to help make the federal presence felt in Ondo State, through the award of projects, especially roads.
“Virtually all the federal roads in Ondo State are impassable and the people we have in government who should have made a case for us are looking away, pursuing personal interests,” the group further lamented.
It also called on the President to give indigenes of the state, relevant slots in the coming constitution of federal boards and parastatals, noting, “For years on end, Ondo people have been relegated to the background in the scheme of things.”
