Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has ordered the release of 40 inmates from three of the Correctional Centres across the state.
Twenty-four (24) inmates were released from Oko Correctional Centre; Ten (10) from Benin Correctional Centre; and Six (6) from Auchi Correctional Centre, bringing the total numbers of inmates released by Edo State Government, so far, to two Hundred and thirteen (213).
SPARKNEWS NAIJA reports that Edo State Government had few months ago released one hundred and Seventy-threee (173) inmates from some of the facilities across the state.
Effecting the release on behalf of the state government, Edo State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, said "the release is in alignment with the Correctional Centres decongestion exercise going on across the country".
To the inmates the Edo state Attorney General said " You have been released courtesy of His Execellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki, who has graciously signed for the release of all of you".
"This is in alignment with the descongestion of Correctional Centres that is going on all over the country. And this particular one is in alignment with one that was initiated by the Anthoney-General of the Federation with the full cooporation of the Controller-General of Correctional Centre."
While asking them not to go back to their old ways, the Commissioner handed to each now freed inmates palliative from the state government.
She said: "In addition to this, His Execellency has graciously approved a pack of palliative that will keep you for a little while where ever you reside before you start picking up with your normal life."
