For those of you who watched the Democratic National Convention and that of the Republican Party, the meaning and import of ideas contestation and political marketing must have been brought closer to your understanding.
After the conventions, Trump, who was suffering immense polling deficit is closing up. Biden is still ahead but the gap between him and Trump in polling results has narrowed.
This is politics powered by ideas, presentation, articulations and personality, not threat of violence
In the Kogi guber polls, many were slaughtered while a woman was roasted alive in her residence. Any investigation? Any arrests? I am not aware.
As Edo Governorship election beckons, the threat of violence as manifested and signaled in the ongoing electioneering paints a disquieting picture of a state preparing for war. While ideas are on flight, the political space is oozing trepidation because there must never be a winner and a loser in the election. It is a do or die.”
But who wants to die for politicians? Social media is filled with lies and distorted stories designed to inflame passion and anger. Never in the history of Edo have I seen such a politically charged terrain as we experience today. And those you expect to avail their voices in lowering the political temperature are the ones supplying fuel for a heightening of tension.
Again , I ask. Who wants to die for politicians.? You will die for nothing because their ambition is not even worth a finger of your hand, not to talk of your life or blood.
The reliance on violence is an expression of apprehension about prospects of failing to make it in a free and fair processes. What is democracy without fairness in the conduct of election and without allowing the people’s votes to count.!!!?
Democracy and violence are mutually exclusive. It is certain that those planning violence are not going to use their children. They intend to exploit the unfortunate economic and social circumstances of unemployed youths to actualize their demonically inspired bloody project.
We want to watch the contestants debate. We want to hear them appeal to their supporters to eschew violence.
They owe us a responsibility not to set the state on fire.
