EDO POLITICS : DEPUTY GOVERNOR AND OPPOSITION TRADE TACKLES OVER GOVERNORSHIP

By Mike ALADENIKA.

Edo state Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon(Comrade) Philip Shaibu has alledged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and it's former National President, Adams OSHIOMHOLE are perfecting strategy to rub Edo State electorates of their mandate through what he termed as Judicial backdoor, a scheme which he likened to that of Imo State.

Comrade Shaibu who stated this during an empowerment program for Afemai Youths in Ogbona and Jattu respectively, while reaffirming confidence in the judiciary and President Muhammadu Buhari to protect the nation’s democracy and the collective will of Edo people said "Comrade Oshiomhole at a public function at his Iyamho residence during the yuletide declared that he was instrumental to the Supreme Court victory of Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State and will do the same to upturn the popular victory of Obaseki in Edo State".
Shaibu expressed disappointment over Oshiomhole’s vituperation on the clear victory of Obaseki, stressing that making unguarded utterances to indict the integrity of the Judiciary and to redeem his larger-than-life public image remains ridiculous."

According to the Deputy Governor, “The Nigeria Judiciary is known to be amongst the best in the world, therefore, Oshiomhole’s utterance is a mere crying of a beaten baby and he must be made aware that Edo is not Imo State."

“Now that he has vowed to test the collective will of the good people of Edo State by attempting to subvert their will through a questionable judicial arrangement, he will obviously not to be tolerated by the managers of our judiciary.”
He added: “The victory of Governor Godwin Obaseki is a victory for Nigeria’s democracy and it was the first election in Nigeria where all political parties came together to vote for one candidate for the overall development of the state.”

Meanwhile the acting leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has described the deputy Governor's  statement as "a blackmail strategy and campaign of calumny".

The party, in a statement, issued in Benin City, by it's publicity Secretary,Chris Azebamwan, APC said "the statement which Philip Shaibu credited to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is a blatant falsehood as no such words emanated from the elder statesman. It is a smear campaign that is aimed at tarnishing the pristine image of the immediate past Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the vain hope it would pit the judiciary against the legal reliefs sought by the APC".
According to the Publicity Secretary, Care-taker Committee, APC, Edo State,  " I  challenge Philip Shaibu to provide an audio or video clip of the occasion where Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is alleged to have made such a statement. Instead of this puerile and infantile attempt at diverting attention from the the substance of the matter in court  which centers on forgery and perjury, Philip Shaibu is well advised to address his mind to shoring up their defence".

"Philip Shaibu conveniently lost sight of the fact that the issue in contention borders on forgery and perjury. APC did not go to the Federal High Court to challenge the outcome of the September 2020 election."

It would be recalled that there are pending litigations on the process leading to the September 19th, 2020 governorship Election won by the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki.
