There is palpable fear and tension  in Benin City, Edo State capital  amid reports that no fewer than ten  suspects detained at the state criminal investigation department (CID) have reportedly escaped from detention at the state Command Headquarters of the Nigerian Police.

These escapees are said to have been in lawful detention at the CID section of the state command until
the night of the 31st of December,2020 when the suspects reportedly "gained freedom"

SPARKNEWSNAIJA'S investigation reveals that  at about 9.00 PM on 31 December 2020, one of the policemen on duty at the counter of the state CID had reportedly gone to attend to one of the detainees and thereafter locked the cell with a padlock but unknown to him that it was not properly locked  as the lock did not fit in.

It was also revealed that one of the detainees who observed that the padlock did not properly fit into the cell's burglary proof iron  then informed others who then agreed to escape from the cell one after the other.

While the whereabouts of the other policemen on duty that night could not be immediately accertain  it however not clear what the next line of action of the police would be.

Meanwhile, a phone call from SPARKNEWSNAIJA news desk to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Edo State Command, Chidi Nwabuzo confirmed the incident but disagreed with the numbers of escapees as reported on social media as he said "ten criminals escaped out of which two have been rearrested"
SPARKNEWSNAIJA can authoritatively confirm that the police command has commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the escape of the detainees as the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of police in charge of zone 5, Benin City was sited at the state command possibly for an "on the spot assessment', even as our checks indicate that all the policemen on the counter duty and those on guard have been arrested by the management of the Edo state police command for possible investigation.
