Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State on Tuesday visited the families of four farmers and vigilante members who were recently killed by Fulani herdsmen in Ugo Community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area.
Heads of security agencies in the State and some leaders of the Peoples Democratic party, PDP, accompanied the Governor on the fact-finding tour to assess the security situation in some parts of the State.
Addressing some elders in the locality who converged at the palace ground of the Duke (Enogie) of Ugo Community, Obaseki, promised to support the bereaved families through the Local Government Council and make the criminal elements to account for the affliction they have caused.
He also expressed worry over the unfortunate incident and assured that the military will soon carryout a drill in the forests and route out the remnants of the notorious elements.
He also said criminals cannot overrun the State under his watch, adding that the security of lives and properties remain the priority of his Government.
Obaseki, urged the rural dwellers particularly the bereaved families not to take the laws into their hands, adding that the Nigeria police investigation into the incidents.
"Let me specially acknowledge and condole with the families of the bereaved who lost their lives in the unfortunate incidents a couple of weeks ago.
"Good enough you have information as to their specific locations. The operations will be carried out to root them out. They cannot have more arms than the Nigerian army.
So, they will see superior fire power.
We cannot bring back the lives that we have lost. All we can do is to make sure that we do not lose more lives.
"We will support the Local Government Chairman to help and support the families of the bereaved", he said.
Earlier in a remark, the Chairman of Orhionmwon Local Government Area, Mr. Sylvester Okoro, lamented several attempts he made in the past three years to carryout a data base of lawful herders that are operating in the area, but was rebuffed.
He also sued for the intervention of the State Government.
"Our women are scared of going to their farms. Their plantains are ripe and their farm produce are getting rotten", he said.
A leader of the People Democratic party (PDP), Mr. Chris Agbonwanegebe who gave a brief history of how the farmers and herders crisis started about eight years ago, outlined challenges the rural dwellers in the locality.
