On the 14th of March, 2021, it will be exactly one year when Dr. Tony Aziegbemi assumed office as the State Party Chairman, of the People's Democratic Party(PDP), Edo state chapter.
Dr. Tony Aziegbemi who upon completion of his primary education in Warri, Delta State, moved to Eghosa Anglican Grammar School, Benin City; from where he proceeded to Edo College, Benin for his A/Levels.
As a result of his brilliance, he got a federal government scholarship to study abroad. He chose the old Soviet Union and did not return home until he bagged the highest educational attainment anybody could have dreamt of, a Ph.D in Economics.
This soft spoken and amiable gentle may be described as a God sent leader to the party in Edo state as his assumption into office changed the story of a party in opposition to a party in government.
Although the party, PDP, in it's days as the opposition Party in Edo state was more vibrant than the ruling party as it's charismatic Chairman then, now the National Vice Chairman, South-South, Chief Dan Osi Orbih built a solid and robust party which made it a viable template for the Governor, his deputy and supporters to pot into when the APC ran into troubled political waters in Edo state.
Dr. Tony Aziegbemi was seen by many, initially, as the dark horse but luckily, his tenacity and zeal propelled him to go into the trenches to galvanise the required critical support base at the party's congress which eventually held, where he was elected the chairman of the party in the state.
Many political watchers and students agreed that there is, indeed, every reason for the party to celebrate. A party that had lived in the shadows of its past glory and opposition for many years now transformed into the ruling party, with all of its attractions.
The September 19, 2020 governorship Election victory certainly brought the PDP back into life. This Esan born politician and a diplomat with a Doctorate in Economics from a Russian University, was never a push over as far as Edo politics is concerned. Having had his political baptism as a member of the House of Representatives in the 7th and 8th National Assembly, he could be said to have had enough tutelage in the game to know how to outsmart opponents and deliver a quality result.
As a party chairman, the place of Dr. Aziegbemi in the history of the party in Edo State is already secured. From near obscurity to fame. From opposition to being the ruling party. Thus confirming the saying in some quarters that it's obvious that the winning aura and charisma, coupled with hard work as well as broad based support, catapulted the PDP to the top in Edo State and broke a 12 year streak of election losses at the gubernatorial level.
The September 19 Edo 2020 victory of Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Comrade Philip Shuaibu was simply an icing on the cake. Three factors have been identified, by many, as having aided the PDP victory, among which are, the solid foundation laid by Chief Dan Osi Orbih, former State Chairman of the party, and the PDP candidates in the election, that is, the duo of Obaseki and Shaibu's reputation and acceptability as well as the winning aura of Dr. Tony Aziegbemi.
Should the gathering in Benin be turned into a carnival of a sort then the political gods of the land would not have been angered.
