HIJAB CONTROVERSY : MURIC'S CALL FOR RENAMING OF MISSION SCHOOLS UNWARRANTED - NCGF

By Esosa Omorogbe.

The Nigeria Christian Graduate Fellowship has expressed deep worries over the trauma the controversy in Kwara State over the use of hijab in mission schools may have thrown students of the affected schools into, as a result of "unnecessary heat generated by unconscionable and ill-advised policy of the State Government."

According to a statement issued  by the leadership of the NCGF signed by it's National President, Prof. Chuks Eboka and General Secretary, Pastor Philip Nwaegeruo the fellowship "has restrained itself from commenting on this matter or joining issues with the Kwara State Government or any other group such as the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) since it is public knowledge that the matter is subject of litigations and, therefore, subjudice".

"It would have been good for the gladiators like MURIC to wait for the outcome of the court processes before embarking on actions that are capable of affecting justice in the matter."
However, NCGF  is constrained to react to the recent call by MURIC that the affected mission schools should be renamed by the State Government for, according to them, failing to abide by the court pronouncements. "This call is unnecessary, unwarranted and provocative. It is rather an act of desperation by an illegitimate mother to dispossess a rightful mother of her child. It can only be a replay of the biblical incident where a careless harlot mother killed her child only to insist that the living child of her colleague should also be killed. Unfortunately, there is no wise king Solomon in Kwara State to decipher this selfish posturing of MURIC".

NCGF further said  "It is a known fact that Islamic education and Islamic schools are not tailored towards a balance education unlike Christian education and mission schools. MURIC's call can only be described as a product of envy that should not be accorded any value, but intended for mischief".

"The allusion by MURIC that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is working with Boko Haram to frustrate Muslim girl child education is laughable. It is quite unfortunate that rather than MURIC appreciating the complementary role mission schools under CAN are playing to make up what is lacking in Islamic education curriculum to produce quality graduates, they are busy denigrating CAN.
"One wonders why a group like MURIC should not be preoccupied with addressing the flaws inherent in its religious theology that radicalizes its members and produces fundamentalist ideologies like Boko Haram which, ultimately, retrogresses rather than bring about a progressive society."

The Nigeria Christian Graduate Fellowship, therefore, calls on MURIC to approach equity with clean hands. "The Golden rule provides that you do to others what you would want others do to you. Can MURIC tolerate a situation where a Christian girl for any reason in an Islamic schools will insist on a dress code contrary to Islamic approved dress code by the institution? Primary and post primary schools all over the nation use uniforms chosen by school management. Choice of dress code is the prerogative of school administrators. If parents decide to have their wards educated in any school system, they should abide by the rules of the institution(s) and not raise unnecessary heat."

"MURIC is strongly advised to be fair and objective in her pursuit of the so-called Muslim Rights, knowing that where one person's right ends, another's begins. Its leaders should address the theology that promotes fundamentalism among its members rather than dissipate energy on dress code that has nothing to do with quality education".
