THE DAY NIGERIA'S NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA HITS THE GROUND RUNNING AS WTO'S DG.

By Mike ALADENIKA

Early Monday morning, the media and senior officials of the World Trade Organization (WTO) were on hand to welcome  Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala  on her first day as WTO Director-General.

Nigeria's NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA made  history as the first woman and first African to take up this post.

On her first day as Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala highlights the importance of the WTO as she
takes the floor at a WTO meeting for the first time as Director-General. She attends the General Council.

The WTO DG, Dr. NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA addressed the General Council after officially taking office to thank members for the confidence members placed in her. "I'll bring all my knowledge, passion, experience and persistence to the task at hand, reforming the organization and achieving results," she says.

WTO members have just agreed that the organization’s 12th Ministerial Conference will take place on the 29 November 2021 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The conference will be chaired by Kazakhstan's Minister of Trade and Integration.

WTO members consider that this new venue and timing are more realistic given the current situation.

Originally scheduled to take place in 2020 in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, the conference was postponed due to #COVID19.
Director-General  and the chairman of WTO fisheries subsidies Wills Santiago also had  talks, welcoming  civil society's plea for a successful conclusion to the negotiations, visiting today an ice sculpture set up in front of the WTO headquarters by the #StopFundingOverfishing coalition.
