OPINION : OLD STUDENTS Of MOMODU COLLEGE AGBEDE APPEAL FOR EDO STATE GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION

By Mike O. Enahoro

As of February 2018, the College with a total population of about 70 students both in Junior and Senior Secondary Schools had 4 teachers with 1 of them incapacitated leaving only 3 of which 2 were due for retirement. The College infrastructures; Classrooms, Laboratories, Administrative buildings, School Hostel Buildings, and Staff Quarter Buildings as well as all the sporting facilities were all in a total mess. We saw a college with no chair, library, or anything to appreciate it as a school. It was as bad that intruders went encroaching the College properties.

With the above sorry state of the College, we saw the need to bring old students of Momodu College Agbede together for the dilapidated state of the state-owned college. The need to set up an old student association for the College became very necessary. We did the needful, reached out, and successfully came up with Ansar-Udeen/Momodu College Old Students' Association (AMCOSA).

We put together an Interim Management Team led by Barr. Mack Ogbamosa and set an Agenda; to within six months ensure an EXCO was in place. By the Grace of God, within that said six months, we were able to employ more teachers, graded some part ways, supported bringing of chairs to the school, and lots of other stuff including drafting a constitution and setting up of a Board of Trustees for AMCOSA with the oldest graduate of the College in the person of Dr. Ibrahim D. Idris, a former Director-General, Nigerian Airspace Management Authority (NAMA) as BoT Chairman. Within the period, others like Prof Tom Ofuya, Prof Momoh Lawal Riliwan, and many others came to the rescue. No doubt that the above informed the reason, the number of students increased from about 70 to 230. And by June 2018, pioneer EXCO members led by Dr. Lecky Mustafa, a former INEC National Commissioner was elected and sworn in.
The Dr. Lecky Mustafa led EXCO wasted no time as it created various committees and amongst which was the Infrastructure Development Committee led by Prof Momoh Lawal Rilwan as Chairman, Education Committee with Dr. Momoh A.M. Kabiru as Chairman and many others.

By today, Momodu College Agbede now has 16 teachers with only 3 as Government employees, and 1 of the 3 is incapacitated. This means AMCOSA has been funding the salaries of 13 staff of Momodu College such that, even the College Vice Principal is an AMCOSA employee. AMCOSA has embarked on other various projects including renovations of Classrooms, and the provision of chairs, computers, links for the provision of laboratory equipment. AMCOSA has also provided a Master Piece School gate and security house that is second to none in any Government-owned primary or post-primary school in Edo State.

AMCOSA on April 3, 2021, sworn in a new EXCO led by Dr. John Oyarebu Edemode as President during its Second Annual General Meeting held in the College.

While responding on behalf of the new EXCO, the new President Dr. John Edemode appealed to the Government of Edo State led by H.E. Governor Godwin Obaseki to intervene in the predicaments faced by the College. According to the Association's President, "AMCOSA has shown a willingness to partner with Edo State Government under the Administration of Mr. Godwin Obaseki to make Momodu College Agbede a College of international reference where every family in Nigeria will want their children to attend." He noted that, with the enthusiasm of members, and with the level of AMCOSA's commitments to the College to achieve such a lot within three years of its existence, Edo State Government will be glad to partner with the Association.
