UNIVERSITY DON ADVOCATES FAVOURABLE ECONOMIC POLICY TO GROW INFORMAL SECTOR.

With a population of over 206Million People, according to the United Nations data of June 2020,  average growth rate of 2.6% per annum and an increasing unemployment rate of 33.3%, Nigeria's  economy is seriously challenged to the point that if urgent and deliberate steps are not taken, may perpetuate poverty of the Majority. 
This was part of the postulations of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Igbinedion University, Okada, Prof. Deborah Omotsefe Odejimi while delivering the University's 18th Inaugural Lecture.

Prof. Odejimi  who posited that women and girl child were mostly hit by unfavorable cum discriminatory policies and practices said women form the bulk in the informal sector in most economies most expecially, Nigeria.
The University don whose lecture was titled "They may be small but hold the ace for economic growth : The relevance of the informal sector in Nigeria" said accessibility to loan facility in an organized informal sector will go a long way to grow the Economy as well as help to improve the standard of living of the vast majority of the people. 

Prof. Odejimi  opined that should a proactive Government policy be initiated to guarantee loan facility at a microfinance level for rural areas in Nigeria Majority of Nigerians would be well positioned towards growing the national economy. 
She called on government, at all levels, to ensure that monies budgeted gets to the grassroots even as she wants ambiguous customary laws reviewed in  favour of women or at best, fair to all. 

The Igbinedion University, Okada professor said government should initiate deliberate policy to incorporate the informal sector in the tax dragnet, an indication that operators may have been accommodated as beneficiaries of favourable policies. 
Speaking earlier, the vice Chancellor, Igbinedion University, Okada, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye said the University is very pro-active with it's academic calendar despite the Pandemic, stressing that the University still maintain it's lead among Committee of universities.
