A Benin based socio Cultural group, the Heartbeat Peoples Development Initiative (HPDI), has called for the zoning of the 2023 Presidency to the Old Benin and Delta provinces that metamorphosed into the defunct Midwest Region and later Bendel, now Edo and Delta states of southern Nigeria.
Speaking at a news conference in Benin, the Founder, HPDI, architect Nosasu Omoregbe Edigin said, "our group's call was based on the constitutionally recognized concept of the old Northern and Southern protectorates that produced the defunct four regional governments in Nigeria before the advert of the military.
According to him, "in the spirit of Federal Character, the Nigeria rotational Presidency should be rotated between the old Northern protectorates and the old Southern protectorates". While stressing that "the rotation in the old Southern protectorate should be between the Western Region, the Eastern Region and the Midwest Region".he concluded.
Architect Nosasu Omoregbe Edigin said "the current rotational practice is no longer acceptable as it has made a minority of a people who were before now equal to others,in all ramifications."
"For justice and fair play, all sections of the country should be given the opportunity to take it's turn at the presidency which should not be the perogative of a few to Lord things over others."
According to the group, there is no better time than now for either Edo and Delta State to produce the president of Nigeria.
