The office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has confirmed that the Federal Government of Nigeria has received GBP 4,214,017.66 of the loot associated with the family members of former Delta State Governor, James Ibori.
According to the Special Assistant (Media and Public Relations)Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Dr Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, in a press statement on Tuesday (18th day of May, 2021) the amount had been credited to the designated Federal Government account with naira equivalent value of the amount as of 10th May, 2021.
Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, had signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, for the repatriation of the Ibori loot on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The development, according to Abubakar Malami, was a demonstration of the recognition of the reputation Nigeria earns and enjoys through records of management of recovered stolen Nigerian assets in the execution of public-oriented projects.
The receipt is seen in some quarters to have put paid to the seeming controversy between Delta State and the Federal government about who receives the fund as well as the ownership of the fund.
