President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointed of Mr. BALARABE SHEHU ILELAH, as the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who announced the appointment in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday said "Mr. Ilelah’s appointment is for a tenure of five years in the first instance".
The appointment is coming amidst a row between the Nigerian Government and Social media giant, Twitter. It will be recalled that the Federal government through the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed suspended Twitter’s operations in Nigeria last week.
The suspension came a day after the platform(TWEETER) deleted a tweet from President Buhari’s timeline for violating their rules. The president had made a ‘genocidal’ threat against the Igbos over the rising Insecurity in the region.
The Federal government has also directed the NBC to commence the registration of all online microblogs operating in Nigeria, a directive which most Nigerians see as a follow-up to the face-off with Tweeter.
Meanwhile, the immediate past Director General of NBC, Prof Professor Armstrong Idachaba has confirmed the development.
Speaking with SPARKNEWSNAIJA in a telephone conversation after the announcement, Prof Idachaba said "I appreciate the opportunity given me to have served the Nation through the Directorate of the NBC, an experience that has been so rewarding.
The outgone DG said "NBC will continue to perform it's supervisory role in maintaining professionalism of operators in the industry."
The new Director General of the Nigeria Broadcast Commission BALARABE SHEHU ILELAH is a veteran broadcaster.
