Senator(Dr.) Domingo Obende has sent birthday message to Nigeria's last Military head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar as he clocks 79.
In a statement issued in Abuja, a copy of which was made available to SPARKNEWSNAIJA, Senator Domingo Obende described
Gen A.A. ABUBARKA as "a unique personality both in public and private life".
"My dear H.E. sir, it is my prayer for you today, as always, that God grants you peace, good health in mind and body to celebrate more years in continued service to our Nation, Africa and the World."
The Senator who represented Edo North Senatorial district of Edo state at the 7th Senate (2011-2015) said "your commitment to sustaining democracy in Nigeria and Africa can not be overemphasized, as you celebrate your birthday sir, I join your numerous fans, friends and family members to celebrate you and your achievements."
"My relationship with you, since 1985 at Ikeja, Lagos till date keeps revealing to me and to many others, the uniqueness of your character and personality. Sir, you did not only build a Nation, Nigeria, you also build countless numbers of individuals who today are doing greatly across Africa."
"It is my prayer sir, that God will continue to guide and guard you in all your dealings, even as I pray for good health and longevity for you and your household", Senator Domingo Obende concludes.
General Abdulsalami ABUBARKA who was born on the 13th of June,1942 was Nigeria's last Military head of State who, a few days after assuming office, promised to hold elections within a year and transfer power to an elected president.
Gen. ABUBARKA then established the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), appointing former Supreme Court Justice Ephraim Akpata as chairman.
The INEC held a series of elections first for Local Government Areas in December 1998, then for State Assemblies and Governors, National Assemblies and finally for the President on 27 February 1999.
In May 1999 General Abubakar, handed over power to the newly elected civilian president, Olusegun Obasanjo and retired from the army.
