SPORTS : BUT FOR EDO STATE NIGERIA WOULD NOT HAVE GONE FOR THE OLYMPICS . . . Minister.

Nigeria's participation in the just concluded Olympics would not have materialized but for the acceptance of Edo State government to host the National Sports Festival, which was held with all it's glamour in Benin City.

Nigeria's Minister for Youths and Sports, Chief Sunday Dare who stated this in Benin City on Sunday at the official draw for the maiden edition of Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament said "the well organized National Sports Festival hosted by Edo state was the much desired platform needed to get Nigeria's athletes fit for the Olympics"

The minister, who was a special guest at the fixture draw for the tournament said Edo State plays leading roles in sports and sports administration which has made it's citizens relevant in all areas of sports.


Chief Sunday Dare commended the organizers of the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament for conceiving the idea which he said will help to scout for future falcons. He also commended the sports loving Deputy-Governor of Edo State, comrade Philip SHAIBU for his resilience and commitment to sports development.

In her remarks, the brain behind the tournament and wife of Edo State governor, Mrs Betsy Obaseki said "the state government has decided to redirect whatever negative popularity of the past to a positive venture in sports".


Mrs Betsy Obaseki who said the tournament is a private  collaboration with friendly partners, stressing that the tournament would be a good ground for National and international scouts to engage upcoming talents.

No fewer than twelve female football teams are participating in the maiden edition of Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament.
