Edo State Task Force Against Human Trafficking has declared a landmark achievement in recent time as it secured its first conviction against act of human trafficking and irregular migration in the state.
In a Statement Delivered by the Chairperson, Edo State Task Force Against Human Trafficking, Professor Yinka Omorogbe SAN, on the occasion of the International World Migrants Day celebration, said the conviction is in respect of one of its first cases, filed in 2018.

Imadegbelo of Edo State Judiciary, Benin Criminal Court division 2. In charge no: B/CD/198c/18. delivered a judgement in the case of :Attorney General fo Federation .

The accused persons/ (defendants)were found guilty of the offence of conspiracy to commit human trafficking, expotation of the victims to libya, facilitating the foreign travel of victims , the defendants were convicted on 6 counts charge and sentenced to multi terms of 5years and 7years imprisonment without the option of a fine, respectively.
"This case, which was first filed in 2018, is a landmark for the state, as it sends a clear signal of zero tolerance to human trafficking in Edo State, and is a clear testimony to our determination to ensure that no trafficker goes unpunished".
"We also use this opportunity to appreciate and commend the zeal and dedication of the committee members of the Taskforce. Your continued unwavering commitment to the success of the fight against human trafficking and irregular migration is highly appreciated.
"We commend the Investigators who displayed diligence, dedication to duty and the Prosecutors who were resolute in standing up to the shenanigans that are sometimes part of the criminal justice process in Nigeria. We thank you even as we encourage you to continue your good work."
Prof Omorogbe further said "It is important to emphasise that His Excellency fully supports migration and travel as an integral part of contemporary life in the 21st century. His Excellency also appreciates that Edos are highly civilised, enlightened and aspirational people. He therefore fully upholds the international right of freedom of movement, including the right to travel in accordance with the legal requirements of the destination country. However, under no circumstances should this be used as a shield for the attempted enslavement and exploitation of Edo people. All efforts to travel legally and with dignity will definitely be supported by His Excellency."
