The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) is 73, Monday, 4th of April, 2022. World leaders and head of government of member nations did rolled out drums to celebrate what they termed a landslide global security achievement even as the organisation is currently faced with one of its greatest challenge as Russia takes on Ukraine.
The World leaders who are members of NATO in their respective messages to the organisation said the objectives of the 12 founding fathers are laudable.
According to the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, "73 years ago today the founding members of NATO came together, united by a shared belief in liberty and sovereignty. That conviction endures today.
The people of Ukraine are fighting for that same freedom. We will continue to work with our allies to ensure Putin fails."
While to the America's Department of Defence, "Today we celebrate the 73rd birthday of NATO and the principle that we are all Stronger together. We are NATO."
Bulgarian government was quoted as saying "Today we mark the 73rd anniversary of NATO. As a proud member of the strongest defense alliance in the world, Bulgaria values and supports our joint efforts for peace, democracy & stability.
Slovakia says "On April 4th 1949, 12 countries signed Washington Treaty and agreed to defend each other if any of them is attacked.
73 years later, this commitment is firmly shared by 30 Allies, what makes NATO the biggest, the strongest, the most successful Alliance in history.
Slovakia."
As NATO member nations continue to celebrate the formation of the organisation the question in the minds of many is "can Ukraine say the same of NATO today?"
Meanwhile, Russia has sent warning signals to both Finland and Sweden against joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO.
The spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova said there would be severe military and political consequences if Finland and Sweden opt to join NATO, as both countries share borders with Russia in the Arctic Circle.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Zakharova warned that mooting the idea of NATO would be detrimental to both countries
Finland and Sweden should not base their security on damaging the security of other countries and their accession to NATO can have detrimental consequences and face some military and political consequences.
“We regard the Finnish government’s commitment to a military non-alignment policy as an important factor in ensuring security and stability in northern Europe,” Zakharova said.
