WINNING THE APC PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION : THE ODDS IN FAVOR OF DR. AKINWUMI AYODEJI ADESINA .

While on my way to support the ground troop in Nigeria, I shared with one of the ghost writers of the “Adesina for President Diaspora Support Group of North America and Europe” the good news that Dr. Adesina has passed the second hurdle in our bid for his election to the number one  position of president of Nigeria come 2023.

I reasoned that the first major hurdle was pulling together of the scarce resources to purchase the N100 million APC Presidential nomination form by well wishers of the well publicized 28 support groups for Adesina’s presidential race.

His response to my good news message got me thinking! Critically. Very critically. So much so that I believe I should share the thoughts with Nigerians both at home and Diaspora.

Why? This is a cry for help! For two reasons: get the APC party leaders to act and rally for Adesina; and to secure Dr. Adesina’s commitment to run for office of President of Nigeria under the APC platform.
Adesina once said to me, “a man cannot be greater than the country that made him.” My interpretation?  “I will answer the call of our leaders and Nigerians when called upon and when the time is right.”

For Adesina’s supporters, the time is now for Nigerians and our leaders to call upon Dr. Akinwumi Adesina to step into the ring!!

When President Akinwumi Adesina succeeds President Muhammadu Buhari, we trust that he will do more than his predecessor as expected to unite a divided Nigeria through his visionary leadership, policy and institutional reforms, increased foreign direct investment inflows, private sector engagement, and structured investments in human capital, especially in our youths, women and smallholder farmers.

Being the financial economist he has become, we are confident that Adesina will lead ALL Nigerians into an economic boom beyond the monolithic oil boom of the 70’s through the 90’s in Nigeria.

So what is this thought provoking response of the Diaspora Support Group ghost writer?

He said to me:

“Dr. Tony, Congratulations! You have your man crossed the first rubicon!  Now he must face the other contestants for his party ticket!

“What can you do next? The answer to who takes the ticket is in the hands of the governors.
And most governors have their candidates already!”
I agree with many other Nigerians around the world. This ghost writer hit the nail on the head!

My immediate first response was as follows: “And thanks for your support in delivering those well written messages to the Nigerian public and Adesina’s supporters and admirers! We did it, together with so many others in the Diaspora and in Nigeria. We thank God Almighty for the small victories.”

The truth is, Adesina has remained largely unavailable to participate in the pursuit of our presidential bid on his behalf. The ground troop and the Diaspora support teams are committed to get Adesina to the finish line of winning the race to become “President Akinwumi Adesina of Nigeria”, come February 2023.

Yet, Dr. Adesina remains uncommitted given the job at hand. His focus remains on flawless delivering on the mandate of the the African Development Bank (AfDB). A reflection of his winning focus, discipline, integrity and character.

Last we heard of him, he was with President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, in preparation for the AfDB Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held on 23 to 27 May, 2022.

In the midst of his preparation for the AGM, Adesina was solving the pending challenges of global food crisis.

In his recent presentation to the United States Sub Committee on global food crisis, he was proffering solutions on how to avert the “horrific perfect storm of the pending global food crisis” and how best to ring-fence Africa against the economic shocks through scale up of the banks renowned “Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT)” program among others.
Adesina sought for two hundred million dollars support for TAAT from the 5 billion crisis aversion portfolio of the United States government through the ranking members of the Senate Subcommittee, Democrats and Republicans alike. Not to mention the physical presence of Adesina to receive the honorary doctorate degree in humane letters awarded to him by Duke University in North Carolina earlier last week!

Back to our ghostwriter. He said to me: “The president has a big role to play in swaying the minds of the governors to the eventual winner!”

This he said in reference to President Muhammadu Buharii. Coincidentally, just last week on Channels TV, President Buhari’s special media aide, Femi Adesina noted that the President does indeed have a favorite presidential candidate in mind.

Granted that Dr. Adesina has not committed to contest the presidential election and has simply enjoyed the activities of his well wishers, we too wonder if Adesina could remotely be the man Mr President has in mind, considering that many other contestants have worked more closely with him than Dr. Adesina.

So the question remains? What are the odds for Adesina winning the APC presidential ticket come May 30, 2022?

Let me make bold to say that the odds may be likened to the recent victory of the horse named “Rich Strike” at the Kentucky Derby. With an 80:1 odd of winning, this horse came from behind to the race to win, a feat that has not been witnessed since 1913 according to racing experts in the United States. Hmmmm!

Indeed, there are many powerful people in the crowd of presidential contestants in the ruling APC party in Nigeria.

Our ghost writer said, “For me, l keep my fingers crossed! You’re an optimist! I don't envy your position!”

Honestly, Adesina’s nomination in our prayers as the APC party presidential flag bearer is beyond the good and well wishes of his supporters and admirers who are continuing to work behind the scenes to secure his commitment to run for the presidency.

At this juncture, we seek for the APC party big wigs and power brokers to step up on convincing Adesina to commit and be elected the flag bearer of the APC presidential ticket. Time is running out!
But like “Rich Strike” the winning horse, it is never too late to come from behind to win.

APC party leaders and the #1 citizen of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, we pray, will lead the way to ride the Adesina horse to victory, come February 2023.

But first, they too must canvass for Adesina as the APC consensus candidate. Perhaps a dream? Yes, but dreams do come true, especially for a praying nation like Nigeria.

We remain hopeful and prayerful for a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s electioneering campaign from politics of money to politics of “grey matter infrastructure,” a phrase coined by Adesina while solving the problem of global food crisis and how best to avert the looming economic crisis of Covid-19, the Russian war against Ukraine and climate financing for sustainability of the world we live in today and tomorrow!

Nigeria must arise to lead Africa. When Nigeria wins, Africa wins. When Africa wins, the world will become a better place for this generation and generations to come!

Nigerians deserve a better One Nigeria devoid of youth unemployment, poverty, and lack. With Adesina, there is a better future ahead of Nigeria, Africa and the world at large!
