2023 ELECTION : HOW DEMOCRATIC ARE OUR PARTIES NOW?

By Mike Aladenika.

Ahead of the 2023 general election, the political  parties and politicians are perfecting their strategies to outsmart one another.

While the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) may have concluded their highly "dollarised" primaries with the emergence of a former Vice President,, Alhaji Atiku Abubarka, the party is presumed to have "democratically" elected its candidate, whom it would present before the electorates for possible election.

For the Labour Party, it's delegates congress which produced Mr Peter Obi in Asaba has a process devoid of  possible traditional political intrique, fanfare and visible "dollarizarion" which were conspicuous in some others.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress, APC,  now on the threshold of electing it's own presidential candidate stands beneath a thick cloud of uncertainty. A school of thought within the party favours the process of delegates electing the flag bearer, while the other is still studying the possible body language of Mr President.

The Tuesday meeting between President Mohammadu Buhari and the governors of APC controlled states may have printed vividly the real and genuine feelers and body language of the president when he said "as we approach the Convention, I appeal to all of you to allow our interests to converge, our focus to remain on the changing dynamics of our environment, the expectations of our citizens  and the global community. Our objective must be the victory of our party and our choice of candidate must be someone who would give the Nigerian masses a sense of victory  and confidence even before the elections."

President Buhari however did not mince words to state that no one need to interpret his body language any longer but gets the facts straight "In keeping with the established internal policies of the Party and as we approach the Convention in a few days, therefore, I wish to solicit the reciprocity and support of the Governors and other stakeholders in picking my successor, who would fly the flag of our party for election into the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023."

"In pursuit of the foregoing objectives, the Party has successfully established internal policies that promote continuity and smooth succession plans even at the state and local government levels. For example, first term Governors who have served credibly well have been encouraged to stand for re-election. Similarly, second term Governors have been accorded the privilege of promoting successors that are capable of driving their visions as well as the ideals of the party".

With the message passed, the governors present were quick to realise that although the voice behind the affirmative statement may appear faint, the emphasis could not be mistaken in any way.

It was gathered that the APC governors had to meet to meet to review the instruction given them as well as x-ray the level and signs of democratic tendencies involved.

Unconfirmed source say the governors query the basis for the position of Mr President which most of them said was undemocratic.

The source was quick to query if this was the same process that produced the president, if not why then this disposition.

Some political observers however say the disposition of Mr president is  "highly unpresidented and undemocratic,  which only goes to show the dictatorial tendencies in his person".
