By Mike ALADENIKA.
"Two years after the gruesome murder of our daughter, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa
in Benin City, the police in Nigeria is yet to conclude the case, let alone prosecuting the perpetrators of the crime." This was the pathetic but firm position of Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki while declaring open the End Of Project Workshop For NAS-GBV Project in Benin City.
Governor Obaseki said "Despite the Inspector General of Police's directive that the case be transferred to his office in Abuja, the police has not been able to come up with anything good to the extent of prosecuting whosoever is found culpable".
"They keep telling us that investigations are ongoing, but the investigating officers keep asking for money, despite the supposed interest of Mr President and the IGP. "
"May I use this opportunity to appeal to the IGP to use his good office to help direct genuine investigation into the crime with a view to re-enstating the confidence of the people in the police.
Governor Godwin Obaseki said his administration has a zero tolerance for Gender Based Violence, GBV, which informed his commitment to the establishment of the Edo State Gender Based Violence Management Committee with other global pattners.
In her welcome address, Edo state first Lady, and the Chairperson of Edo State GBV Management Committee, Betsy Obaseki also expressed reservation about the delay in the investigation and possible prosecution of the criminals who killed Vera Uwaila.
She said this committee will not tolerate any gender based violence irrespective of sexs and personality, stressing that the committee will invoke all relevant laws of the land to make such crime a thing of the past in our society.
In her own presentation at the event with the theme "Strengthening the Evidence and Response Pathways For Gender Based Violence(GBV) in Key States in Nigeria", the immediate past commissioner for Social Development and Gender Issues, Maria Edeko said there is no more space for Gender violators in Edo state and by extension, Nigeria.
