FUEL SCARCITY : Unending Queue in Benin City As Motorists Lament. NNPC Mega Station Rescues Nigerians From Groaning.
By Mike Aladenika
As the scarcity of fuel bites harder in the country with no hope of getting better, commercial drivers and private car owners keep groaning each day to get access to fuel.
Following the deregulation of PMS product by the federal government , Independent market have continued to sell fuel at different prizes ranging from 200, to 300, even as high as 400 Naira per liter across the country.
This development have left the ordinary Nigerians at the mercy of the Marketers.
A drive round major streets in Benin City shows a near empty road as most vehicles that are presently off the roads are keeping vigil at varrios selling point without concrete assurance of getting fuel even at any cost.
SPARKNEWSNAIJA reliably gather that tension mounts in some quarters of benin-City, over the non- availability and high cost of PMS.
It was gathered that some youths mounted barricades on some roads demanding government intervention in averting the current scarcity.
As it is now in benin city, the only seeming hope for the average Nigerian is the NNPC retail outlets established by the federal government to meet the fuel needs of Nigerians.
The NNPC retail station situated on Sapele road axis of the metropolis sells fuel at the government-approved official price which has made that axis of the city a beehive as all motorists find their way there, not minding the long queue and stress attached.
This has increased the sales of fuel at the filling station along with the fact that its manpower and facilities are currently stressed to the brim if something drastic is not done immediately and urgently at that.
SPARKNEWSNAIJA investigations show that the MEGA NNPC service station attends to thousands of vehicles daily from the start of sales in the morning to the close, later in the night.
Motorists who spoke to our correspondents say "the NNPC MEGA Service Station is saving the situation here. If not for MEGA NNPC station, the scarcity would have been harder on the masses".
" We must always thank this MEGA person. Not only that they sell, but they are also selling at the approved price and you are sure of getting the product if you can follow the line and be patient.
Meanwhile, the Edo state government has set up a task force to help curb the diversion of products from the state.
The state commissioner for Mining, Oil and Gas, Engineer Ethan Uzamere, in a statement issued in benin city said the current scarcity is occasioned by bottleneck in the fuel supply chain, which the state government intends to resolve.
