Peter Obi's Presidency : Where is Julius Abure in The Equation?

By Mike Aladenika.

Prior to this  2023 General Elections, Nigerians hardly show interest in who becomes their leaders as they saw and left the electoral process in the hands of a few people, as compared to the level of interest currently shown by Nigerians today.

Despite the fact that several political parties were registered and recognized by the electoral Umpire, Independent Electoral Commission,{INEC), the contest of who become the President has always been between two major Candidates. Whether good or bad, a candidate must emerge as the President, often times after much electoral violence across the country

In all of these elections, Edo State have produced two National Chairmen of Political parties that have produced the President of Nigeria. The first among them is Chief John Oyegun, followed by Adams Alliu Oshiomhole even through their tenures were reduled with crisis and  allegations cum counter- allegations.

Another National Chairman from Edo State is about to make another history of producing the next President of Nigeria in the person of Julius Abure  under the Labour Party.

Labour Party has been in existence but with very low significance which eventually came to lime light shortly after the former Governor of Anambra state joined the party and became its flag bearer.

His emergence as the Presidential Candidate of Labour Party recieved the loudest Ovation, ever, from the ordinary Nigerians who believe that the two major political parties,All Progressive Congress (APC) , and People Democratic party (PDP) have been  throwing up candidates, who in the true sense, lack leadership qualities.

Since his declaration to run as the Presidential Candidate under Labour Party, various support groups have emerged willingly throwing their support behind Peter Obi across the country. Unlike the tradition of endorsing Candidates for money , Peter Obi has received undiluted support from the people because they believe he is a better Candidate when compared to APC and PDP Candidates.

His support base increased tremendously following the economic, insecurity amongst other challenges in the country. Some school of thought believe his antecedents as Governor are much better than those of his fellow contestants.

These positive acceptance has placed Labour Party as a bride, several suitors are gunning for. In Edo State,  several groups have mobilized themselves voluntarily using their personal funds  to sponsor themselves.  This trend was obvious when Peter Obi visited  Edo State, despite denial of Ogbe stadium for campaign rally and erection of bill boards, the people came out with their shirts and caps with crested  "Obidatti" images  stormed the street of Benin under the scorching sun.

The question then is, with all these support on ground, how is Labour Party's  National Chairman, Julius Abure ready to manage the supports and convert it to electtoral victory, especially the ones coming from his home town,  State and the southern part of the country?

The major political parties have fully commenced campaigns but the Labour Party which is supposed to lead  by example and banking on the euphoria of it's grass roots supports currently enjoyed  is yet to commence full campaign.

From all indications, it seems  State chapters  of the party are starved of fund which may have hindered their going out as well as to consolidate on the support and acceptance they have enjoyed since the emergence  of Peter Obi. What is seen around is skeletal campaign of candidates contesting other elective positions.  The campaign on ground does not, in any way, represent the support Labour Party has enjoyed from the people.
