The Edo state office of the National Population Commission (NPC) Thursday, inaugurated the State Security and Logistics committee ahead of the 2023 Population and Housing Census.

The committee consisting of Heads of all the security agencies, the leadership of National Union of Road Transport Workers(NURTW), and the Central Bank among others. 
While performing the inauguration in Benin City, the Federal Commissioner, representing Edo state at the NPC,  Dr. Tony Aiyejina said "the current security situation,  makes it imperative, that the census be conducted in a secured environment, such that both men and materials will be Safe. 

"I want to salute the gallantry and sacrifices of Officers and Men of our security services, some of whom have paid the ultimate price, in combating the security challenges currently bedeviling the country. 
 "It is against this background, that the role of this committee will be pivotal, critical and strategic towards the successful conduct of the census in Edo state.

" I also have a personal conviction that our gallant security agents will rise up to the occasion and make Edo secure and safe for the 2023 Population and Housing Census. 

"As you are aware, Nigeria as a nation, has a checkered history of organizing censuses, right from the first census that was conducted in 1866, to the last one which took place in 2006. 
"Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and it is projected that she will become the third most populous country in the world after India and China by the year 2050. 

"There is no gainsaying the fact that the country is much overdue for a census, seventeen years after the last one was conducted.
 Dr. Tony Aiyejina further said  "the present administration under the leadership of President Muhammad Buhari (GCFR), must be commended for taking the bull by the horns and taking the bold decision to conduct a census for our dear country, Nigeria. 



In his presentation at the ceremony,  the National Director, Data, NPC, Afegbua Abubakar said "Nigeria will be the 4th country in Africa to conduct a digital census, an indication that this census will accommodate all, as it will be conducted via satellite and whatever materials generated would be safe and not open to manipulation. 

Responding on behalf of the committee members, the commissioner of police, Edo state command,  Ahmed Dankwara, said "the census is a national project that would tak3 the involvement of all Nigerian". 


CP Dankwara who was represented by DCP KUNLE OLUSOGA gave assurances that the committee will work with the NPC in order to deliver a hitch free census. 


The committee members have a five point terms of reference which include "To Facilitate the securing of adequate training facilities,  transportation and securing of census personnel and materials as well as to  Maintain public peace, and order around census activities and personnel. 

 "Security of National Population Commission offices, vehicles and equipment as well as to Facilitate and provide  transportation and necessary logistics for the enumeration of hard to reach population, riverine areas, mountainous areas, transient population and areas of insecurity among others
