Dokpesi's Passage: Management Confirms Death As President Tinubu, Governor Obaseki, Nuj, Sparknewsnaija Commiserate

The Board and Management of DAAR Communications Plc, has confirmed the death of its founder, High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi, the Ezomo of Weppa-Wanno, Edo State.

High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi, popularly called DAAR by friends and associates passed on at the early hours of Monday, May 29, 2023.

A press statement signed by the Group’s Managing Director, Tony Akiotu, said High Chief Dokpesi had been sick in the last few weeks but was on his way to full recovery.

Akiotu said: “He had a fall off his treadmill during routine gym exercise.


Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has commiserated with the family  of High Chief Dokpesi,  describing his death as a deep loss to the Nation.

President Tinubu, In a statement issued from his office Monday evening, described the death of the media mogul as a huge loss to the Nigerian media industry and the country.

“The death of High Chief Raymond Dokpesi is a blow to the media industry where he has played pioneering roles in private broadcasting. His pacesetting investment in the industry is an inspiration to many who come after him.

“The history of the evolution of the Nigerian media industry will be incomplete without prominent mention of Dokpesi and his giant footprints on the media landscape.

“I express my sincere condolences to the management and staff of DAAR Communications and the family of the late media entrepreneur for this monumental loss,” he said.


In the aame vein, Edo state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki
has described Dokpesi's death as a deep blow to the state as he is one of our prominent sons.

Governor Obaseki, In a statement said Chief Dopkesi was an illustrious son of Edo State, who recorded indelible achievements that marked him out as one of Nigeria’s most impactful media executives.

According to him, “The Ezomo of Weppa-Wanno, Chief Dokpesi was an outstanding businessman and indeed, a media mogul, who took the bold step to venture into private broadcasting and broke the ground for many who came after him.

“He was a pacesetter and brave in his quest to build Africa’s most enterprising, private broadcasting brand.

“Chief Dokpesi was a man of many parts. From his early academic exploits as a scholar in Poland, he returned to Nigeria to establish himself as an expert in the shipping business. He set up Nigeria’s first shipping line before venturing into broadcasting upon the deregulation of the media business in the country.”

The governor said Chief Dokpesi established the Africa Independent Television (AIT), which recorded many firsts in the broadcasting business, becoming Nigeria’s first satellite television, adding “He expanded the enterprise to North America and Europe, promoting Nigeria’s outstanding entrepreneurial flair.”

He continued, “He was a formidable Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), bringing his experience and expertise to bear in handling party affairs.

“A worthy ambassador of the Edo State, Chief Dopkesi will be remembered for his knack for excellence and unwavering spirit of enterprise.

To the NUJ Edo State Council the death of Chief Dokpesi who is also the Ezomo of  Weppa -Wanno is a great loss  to the Media Industry. 

Edo NUJ In a statement signed by it'ss chairman Comrade Festus Alenkhe, recalled the various journalists that are in the employment of the Africa Independent Television (AlT) and described chief Dokpesi as a successful business executive.

Comrade Festus Alenkhe  said , Dokpesi left behind a great legacy in the media world adding that his Radio and Television stations have also helped in deepening democracy in Nigeria. 

To the Management of Sparknewsnaija, an online platform which parades three of DAAR Groups product at it's management level, the death of High Chief is an irreparable blow to the media industry.

Sparknewsnaija in a press statement issued in benin and signed by one of it's principal Editors, Otunba Mike Aladenika, described High chief Raymond Dokpesi as a "father figure" to many of us who worked with him at a very close range.

"An encounter with Ezomo remains indelible in ones life as your take home from such encounter would shape your life for the better".


Further announcement as regards the burial arrangement is expected will be made by the family In due course.
