The Organizing Committee of Edo Language Day Worldwide has announced that the 2024 Edo Language Day World will hold on August 10 to 13, 2024.
In a communiqué issued by the Organising Committee of Edo Language Day Worldwide, the program is aimed to sustain the revival of the Edo Indigenous language and dialects in the three senatorial districts of Edo State, including Esan, Afemai, Ora, Etsako, and other Indigenous dialects.
The communiqué initialled by the Initiator/Global Coordinator, Edo Language Day Worldwide, Nekpen Obasogie said the 2024 Edo Language Day which include Edo Elders and Cultural Heritage Awards, will be hosted by the Nigerian Canadian Multicultural Centre and NEBO TV Canada.
The event which is expected to hold in-person and virtually will take place on the 10 and 13 of August, 2024 in six locations namely Toronto (Canada), Benin City, Auchi, Okpella, Ekpoma, and Ososo (Edo State, Nigeria).
According to the communiqué, “the Edo Language Day initiative is a deep and manifest response to the warning by the United Nations (UN) over the extinction of Indigenous languages around the world. It has been estimated that, at least, 50 percent of today's spoken languages will be extinct or seriously endangered by 2100. Edo language is not exempted as our Indigenous Edo language is gradually becoming extinct.”
The communiqué stated further that the Edo Elders Award is part of the Edo Language Day program, with a maximum of six nominees annually. The Award program is geared towards recognizing and honoring Edo Elders, who have contributed immensely to the development of the Arts, Culture, and Civilization of the Great Benin Kingdom.
Six Edo Elders and one posthumous recipient have been selected for the ceremony. These selected noble Edo Elders are expected to attend the in-person award ceremony in Toronto or Benin City on August 10th, 2024.
Recipients nominated for the 2024 Edo Elders Award include Chief Sam Igbe, Prof Adesuwa Akenzua-Emovon, Prof. Alex Igbineweka, Dr. Harris Osa. Enabulele, Mr. Osadebamwen Oviasogie and Mr. Soni Irabor
Others nominees are Monica Omorodion and Nosayaba Aghedo for the Edo Cultural Heritage Award while the Ulele Power Sound exponent, Late Osayomore Joseph is nominated for a posthumous award.
The nominated Elders in Nigeria will also receive their plaques in Benin City on August 10th, 2024.
It will be recalled that the declaration of Edo Language Day Worldwide was made at the first worldwide Edo Language Seminar organized by NEBO TV on August 13th, 2022.
