The Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, has achieved the distinction of being the first university in Nigeria and the third in Africa to join the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment, CoARA.
CoARA is a coalition of researchers responsible for evaluating the quality and impact of science and innovation on a global scale.
To fully leverage on its CoARA membership, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the Edo State-owned University, Professor Asomwan Sonnie Adagbonyin, has appointed Dr. Chiedozie Gordan Ike as the CoARA Desk Research Integrity Officer in the Directorate of Research, Publications, and Development of the University.
Dr. Ike holds an MBBS in Medicine and a Master’s degree in Public Health and is also a member of various professional bodies at home and abroad.
The University officially announced the elevation of its status and the appointment of Dr. Ike in a recent publication which highlighted that "Dr. Ike's appointment comes in recognition of his contributions, alongside other key staff of the University, in positioning the institution on the global science and innovation stage, a feat which has placed the university as the first Nigerian institution and one of the first few in Africa to boldly commit to advancing research integrity.”
The University further explained that the "new assessment method makes it easier to acknowledge the contributions of staff in promoting trustworthy and transparent scientific discoveries, moving beyond traditional publication metrics."
Dr. Ike's impeccable C.V. includes being the founding Head of the Office of Research Integrity at Irrua Specialist Hospital and the Director of Research Ethics, Research Integrity, and Public Health at the International Center for Applied Ethics and Public Affairs (ICAEPA) in Sheffield, United Kingdom.
In addition to being a 2016 international fellow in Research Ethics of the Western Institutional Review Board (IRB) and a certified IRB professional (CIP) by the Council for Certification of IRB Professionals in the United States, Dr. Ike is also a certified Trainer in Research Integrity by the Embassy of Good Science in Amsterdam, Europe.
Dr Ike is known for inventing the scientific virtue clock for researchers and being a co-creator of the virtual research clinic at the Irrua Specialist Hospital.
It is worth noting that with the AAU, Ekpoma, there is a significant opportunity for increased global visibility.
