The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Edo State Chapter, is planning a coordinated symbolic protest against the Local Government councils' decision to utilize savings reserves meant for staff salaries to pay furniture allowances to political office holders.
The Edo NULGE's State Administrative Council (SAC) meeting, attended by elected state officers in Benin City, condemned the decision as "insensitive, provocative, and an assault on workers' psyche." The union expressed frustration over unpaid salary arrears and deductions from 2017 to 2023.
Comrade Clifford Daudu, Edo State President, and Olumuyiwa 'Cole Esq, State Secretary, jointly signed a communique stating: "We deliberated on issues affecting members' careers and welfare, particularly unpaid arrears. The Union demanded payment two weeks ago, but none of the councils has responded."
The communique further noted that the Local Government's unprecedented resources in the last 18 months should cover salary and deductions arrears and furniture allowances. "The inability to settle these obligations suggests mismanagement of Local Government funds."
To protest the continued confiscation of workers' salaries and deductions, NULGE members will hold peaceful processions around Local Government Secretariats from Monday, November 4, 2024, between 12 noon and 2:00 pm.
*Key Demands:*
- _Non-utilization of savings reserves for furniture allowances_
- _Payment of salary and deductions arrears_
- _Guarantee of industrial peace in Local Government Councils_
The NULGE leadership warned that if management fails to comply, they cannot guarantee industrial peace.
