The Management of Ambrose Alli University (AAU) Ekpoma has reacted to comments on social media regarding the reinstatement of some lecturers whose appointments were illegally terminated by the dissolved Special Intervention Team (SIT).
According to Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, Principal Assistant Registrar and Head of Information, Public Relations, and Protocol, the trending report is "bereaved of acceptable facts" and "only fit for the dustbins of political propaganda."
Aladenika clarified that Governor Monday Okpebholo's directive to reinstate the affected lecturers was aimed at addressing the injustice to the affected staff. You will recall that even former Governor Godwin Obaseki had found that the lecturers were illegally disengaged from the University's services when he visited the Institution and had given directives to the University's Management to reinstate them. That directive was never implemented due to a lack of political will.
The two reinstated lecturers, Prof. Mrs. Eunice Omonzejie and Dr. Jude O. Obasanmi, were issued letters of retirement and disengagement, respectively, on March 9, 2023. Their termination was reportedly due to their involvement in agitating for better staff welfare, which Obaseki did not deem wrongful.
Aladenika questioned why Governor Okpebholo's intervention in addressing this injustice was being politicized. It is worthy of note that outside these two staff, no other sacked staff have been reinstated. Aladenika emphasized that politicians should avoid playing politics with AAU Ekpoma matters. He praised Governor Okpebholo for attempting to correct past wrongs and urged that he be allowed to do so effectively.
"I wish to emphasize that Governor Monday Okpebholo and the current Management of the University have zero tolerance for sharp practices and other forms of misbehaviour."
Regarding staff members sacked by the SIT due to perceived misconduct, Aladenika explained that they were identified, tried, and reportedly found guilty, leading to their termination or suspension. However, they have the opportunity to appeal through a University Committee where their matters will be treated based on their merit.
