EFCC Probes Edo Local Government Council

By Nosa Ekhator

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into alleged financial misappropriation and fraud at Orhionmwon Local Government Council Area of Edo State.

The investigation, prompted by a whistleblower's petition, alleges that the council is "neck-deep in financial fraud" through the use of two unauthorized company accounts belonging to the council's Director of Finance, Mr. Scott Aigbovia.

According to the petition, dated November 1, 2024, and acknowledged by the commission on November 4, 2024, the two bank accounts, SCOTOSA GLOBAL VENTURE and FORTLIVA NIG.LTD, are private accounts owned by Mr. Aigbovia.

The whistleblower alleges that Mr. Aigbovia, in collaboration with the council chairman, "siphoned resources belonging to the council, which were further shared with other accomplices." The alleged fraud involves millions of naira, with no vouchers to support the transactions, contrary to standard financial practices.

Furthermore, the whistleblower claims that three accounts were opened in the name of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) at the Ministry of Local Government, Community, and Chieftaincy Affairs, allegedly to siphon billions of naira from the 18 local government council areas in Edo State.

According to sources, key figures implicated in the fraud are currently being quizzed by the EFCC's Benin office, where detailed investigations are ongoing.
