AAU Ekpoma Hosts 124th Inaugural Lecture: Renowned Scholar Condemns Excessive Governance Costs in Nigeria
By Nosa Ekhator
Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma's Professor Benson O. Iganiga, a distinguished Professor of Economics, has advocated for a radical overhaul of Nigeria's national economic policy to drastically reduce the country's excessive governance costs, which he described as a significant drain on the nation's resources.
Professor Iganiga made this call while delivering the 124th Inaugural Lecture, titled "Turning the Corners: The Dilemma of Within and Without Macroeconomic Policy Reforms and Poverty in Nigeria."
Professor Iganiga criticized Nigeria's National Economic policy for prioritizing excessive governance costs over job creation, poverty reduction, and infrastructural development. He emphasized that effective macroeconomic policies are crucial to reducing poverty and achieving long-term economic prosperity through job creation and human development.
In his opening remarks, Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma's Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Sunday Olowo Samuel, represented by Professor Mrs. Eunice Omoregie, noted that the lecture's theme and content are particularly relevant amidst Nigeria's current economic challenges. He urged the government, policymakers, and stakeholders to implement people-friendly policies, as recommended in the lecture.
The event's highlight was the decoration of guest lecturer Professor Benson Iganiga and his induction into the community of academic giants.
