Nigerian Professor of Medicine Inducted into US National Academy of Medicine

Professor Friday Ebhodaghe Okonofua, a renowned Nigerian obstetrician-gynecologist, has been inducted into the United States National Academy of Medicine (NAM) as part of the 2024 class of newly elected members. The induction ceremony took place at the NAM Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, on October 18, 2025, where the Academy honors exceptional professionals who have made significant contributions to clinical practice and health policy.
Professor Okonofua was recognized for his leadership in reproductive health, including his groundbreaking national and international studies that have helped prevent maternal deaths and guide programs across Africa. He founded the African Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation (CERHI) at the University of Benin and chairs the Women's Health and Action Research Centre (WHARC).
Other notable NAM members include Anthony S. Fauci, Atul Gawande, Peter Agre, Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, Harold Varmus, Katalin Karikó, Drew Weissman, and David Julius, who have all made significant contributions to their respective fields.
Professor Friday Ebhodaghe Okonofua was the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo  and currently  a member of the Governing Council,  Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.
