The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko Edo Local Government Area of the state as part of measures to safeguard the lives and property of students, teachers and other school personnel.
The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo; Ososo Comprehensive High School, Ososo; and Makeke Secondary School, Makeke.
The directive, which takes immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice, was announced by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele.
According to the statement, the decision was approved by Governor Monday Okpebholo in line with the administration's commitment to ensuring the safety and security of citizens, particularly members of the school community.
As a result of the closure, all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools have been suspended pending further directives from the government.
The state government, however, clarified that students currently participating in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) would be granted access to their examination centres under strict security arrangements coordinated by school authorities, security agencies and community leaders.
To ensure a smooth implementation of the directive, principals of the affected schools have been instructed to facilitate the safe and orderly release of students to their parents and guardians, secure all school facilities and property during the closure period, and maintain regular communication with the state government, the Chief Inspector of Education and relevant security agencies.
They were also directed to comply strictly with any additional instructions that may be issued by the government.
The government appealed to parents, guardians and residents of the affected communities to remain calm and vigilant while cooperating fully with security agencies as efforts are intensified to maintain peace and guarantee public safety.
Reassuring residents of its commitment to restoring normalcy, the Edo State Government stated that all necessary measures are being taken to address the situation and ensure the resumption of academic activities as soon as conditions permit.
The government did not disclose specific details surrounding the circumstances that necessitated the closure but emphasized that the action was taken in the best interest of public safety.
