Benin City — Excitement is building among residents and business owners in Benin City following Governor Monday Okpebholo's announcement that the ongoing Ramat Park Flyover project is expected to be commissioned in November.
The governor made the disclosure on Wednesday after inspecting the multi-billion-naira infrastructure project, expressing satisfaction with the pace and quality of work already completed.
Speaking to journalists at the project site, Okpebholo said the flyover had recorded remarkable progress while the surrounding road network and stormwater drainage infrastructure were also being significantly upgraded.
According to him, the transformation of the area is already evident, describing the renewed Ramat Park axis as increasingly attractive and potentially a major tourist destination. He disclosed that plans were underway for President Bola Tinubu to commission the project in November as part of activities marking his administration's second anniversary in office.
"We have gone round to assess the progress of the Ramat Park flyover project, and I am impressed with what has been achieved so far. Beyond the flyover itself, the adjoining road network and stormwater drainage systems have greatly improved the environment. We expect the park to be completed alongside the bridge, making this location one of the most beautiful and attractive spots in the state," the governor said.
Okpebholo also praised the Federal Government's fuel subsidy removal policy, noting that increased allocations to states had strengthened their capacity to execute developmental projects and meet financial obligations.
Providing an update on construction, the Project Manager, Li Jianshou, revealed that the flyover was more than 95 per cent completed.
He explained that the remaining tasks include the installation of street lighting, expansion of road junctions, road markings, and painting of the bridge, expressing confidence that the project would be ready for commissioning in November.
The inspection tour attracted enthusiastic crowds of residents and traders, many of whom cheered the governor and applauded the transformation taking place around Ramat Park.
Mrs Queen Ehanire, a resident of the area, said the project had dramatically changed the landscape of Ikpoba Hill and restored confidence among residents and local businesses.
"Benin is more beautiful compared to previous years. Governor Okpebholo has done well with this project," she remarked.
Another resident, Mr James Osaigbovo, expressed optimism that the completed flyover would attract more visitors to the city and stimulate commercial activities in the area.
Similarly, commercial driver Mr David Uwadia said the redesigned park and improved road infrastructure would ease traffic congestion and enhance transportation around one of Benin City's busiest intersections.
With construction entering its final phase, expectations are high that the Ramat Park Flyover will become a landmark project, improving traffic flow, beautifying the cityscape, and contributing to economic growth in Edo State.
