AAUE Don Calls for Academic Freedom, Transparency to Drive Institutional Excellence

A Professor of Educational Management at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Professor Rosemary Iyalekhuosa Osawaru-Ogbegie, has identified academic freedom, transparency in governance and the de-politicisation of academic institutions as critical drivers for staff motivation, organisational effectiveness and sustainable educational development.

The professor made the submission while delivering the 151st Inaugural Lecture of the University titled, "Intrinsic Satisfiers: Veritable Keys for Reflective Measurement of Staff and Timely Actualisation of Organisational Goals."

Prof. Osawaru-Ogbegie argued that intrinsic satisfiers should no longer be viewed as abstract psychological concepts but as strategic instruments for institutional transformation, stressing that educational managers must serve as custodians of motivational ecosystems capable of fostering excellence through fairness, autonomy and professionalism.

She recommended the institutionalisation of academic freedom as an intellectual infrastructure embedded in university statutes, staff handbooks, governance charters and quality assurance frameworks. According to her, such a framework would protect scholarly independence in teaching, research, publication and public discourse, thereby strengthening innovation, interdisciplinary scholarship, global research competitiveness and staff commitment. She warned that failure to protect academic freedom would result in intellectual stagnation, brain drain, weak research output and a culture of self-censorship.

The inaugural lecturer also advocated transparency as an ethical and administrative governance system, urging universities to adopt digital governance platforms, open budgeting processes, merit-based promotion criteria and participatory decision-making structures. She noted that transparency enhances institutional trust, improves staff morale and ensures efficient resource allocation, while its absence breeds mistrust, internal conflicts, governance instability and declining productivity.

On institutional governance, Prof. Osawaru-Ogbegie called for the de-politicisation of academic spaces through the insulation of educational institutions from partisan politics, ethnic patronage and undue external interference. She maintained that competence, academic achievement and institutional needs should remain the basis for appointments, recruitment and promotions, warning that politicisation undermines institutional integrity, erodes staff confidence and weakens long-term organisational performance.

In her concluding remarks, the professor maintained that sustainable educational development would only be achieved through the deliberate creation of institutional environments where academic autonomy is protected, fairness guaranteed and professionalism shielded from distortion. Such conditions, she said, would enable universities to evolve from bureaucratic organisations into thriving intellectual communities that promote intrinsic staff satisfaction and institutional excellence.

Declaring the lecture open, the Vice-Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Professor Mrs. Eunice Omonzejie, described the occasion as a celebration of Prof. Osawaru-Ogbegie's scholarship, industry and outstanding contributions to Educational Management. She expressed confidence that the lecture would inspire younger academics, stimulate further research and enrich knowledge within the discipline for the advancement of the University and society.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that the lecture would focus attention on the central role of staff motivation, commitment and productivity in achieving institutional success, adding that the insights presented would enrich policy discussions and contribute significantly to improved educational administration and organisational effectiveness.

Prof. Omonzejie also announced that the Visitor to the University and Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, had approved the comprehensive rehabilitation of the University's water dam. She disclosed that engineers were already on site executing the project in phases, expressing optimism that its completion would permanently address the institution's water supply challenges. She commended the governor for his unwavering commitment to the growth and transformation of Ambrose Alli University.

The highlight of the ceremony was the investiture of Prof. Rosemary Iyalekhuosa Osawaru-Ogbegie into the prestigious class of Ambrose Alli University's inaugural lecturers, in recognition of her academic accomplishments and contributions to scholarship.
