ABUJA — The Rector of Auchi Polytechnic and Chairman of the Committee of Federal Polytechnic Rectors (COFER), Dr. Shehu Salisu Umar, has been inaugurated as a member of the Governing Board of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), in what is seen as another recognition of his contributions to the advancement of technical and vocational education in Nigeria.
Umar was among the members of the new NBTE Governing Board inaugurated in Abuja by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, who charged the appointees to bring their wealth of experience, expertise and individual capabilities to bear on the transformation of technical education in the country.
The Minister disclosed that the appointments were made strictly on individual merit, stressing that the board members were carefully selected based on their capacity to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of Nigeria’s technical education sector.
Alausa urged the newly inaugurated board members to regard their appointments as a call to national service and to work collectively towards strengthening technical and vocational education as a critical driver of economic growth, skills development and national transformation.
Speaking with journalists shortly after his inauguration, Dr. Umar expressed profound gratitude to God Almighty and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for finding him worthy of the national assignment.
“Technical and vocational education is central to our nation's growth, and I am mindful of the weight of responsibility this board carries in shaping the future of technical manpower in Nigeria,” Umar stated.
The Auchi Polytechnic Rector also thanked the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, for the honour of his inauguration, pledging to work with other members of the board to support the Federal Government’s efforts to reposition technical education in line with the vision of President Tinubu and the reform agenda of the Ministry of Education.
“I pledge to give my very best, working with my colleagues on the board to support the drive for repositioning technical education in line with the vision of Mr. President and the reform agenda of the Honourable Minister,” he said.
Umar assured President Tinubu and the Minister that he would justify the confidence reposed in him, adding: “Once again, I thank His Excellency and the Honourable Minister for this trust, and I assure you I will not disappoint.”
The new NBTE board is expected to play a significant role in advancing the Federal Government’s drive to strengthen technical and vocational education, promote skills acquisition and produce the technical manpower required to power Nigeria’s economic development.
