No fewer than 421 graduate nurses of Ambrose Alli University (AAUE), Ekpoma, have been inducted into the nursing profession by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), with a charge to make compassion, professionalism and ethical practice the hallmarks of their careers.
The inductees were formally admitted into the profession at a well-attended ceremony held on Friday at the university’s Main Campus. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Eunice Eboiserehimen Omonzejie, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Osagie Ekhator, urged the new nurses to remember that behind every medical condition is a human being deserving of dignity, patience and respect.
Omonzejie said the graduates had acquired the skills required to care for people at some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives, stressing that the trust placed in nurses by patients must never be taken for granted.
The Vice-Chancellor described the induction as more than the completion of university training, saying it marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of learning and professional growth. She urged the inductees to embrace evidence-based practice, remain intellectually curious and continually update their knowledge as research, technology and new approaches reshape healthcare delivery.
Also speaking, the Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. Sunday Olowo Samuel; Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Prof. H. O. Otamere; and Acting Head, Department of Nursing Science, Mrs. Sarah I. Iyalomhe, charged the new nurses to remain diligent and committed to excellence, noting that the nation and humanity needed their services more than ever.
Performing the induction on behalf of the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of NMCN, Dr. Al-Hassan Ndagi, Mrs. Stella Godwin urged the inductees to make care and compassion central to their profession. She reminded them that “it is your responsibility as nurses to give hope to your patients, even at the point of death.”
The guest speaker and Provost, Bayelsa State College of Nursing Sciences, Dr. Kenneth Belibodei Wasini, cautioned the new nurses against quackery, urging them to protect the integrity of the profession by adhering strictly to established standards and ethical practices. The ceremony thus marked the beginning of a new professional chapter for the 421 inductees as they join the frontline of healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
