BENIN CITY — The Vice-Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma (AAUE), Prof. Mrs. Eunice Omonzejie, has commended Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for fulfilling his promise to implement the new salary structure agreed upon by the Federal Government, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other university-based unions. Omonzejie said the development had spared the university from the industrial crisis that could arise from non-payment of the new salary structure by state-owned universities.
The Vice-Chancellor spoke in Benin City when she led the university's management team on a stop-over visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council. She said Governor Okpebholo had, since assuming office, demonstrated genuine commitment to the welfare of staff and students of the university through various interventions and support.
“With this promise kept, our university is no longer in the line of state-owned institutions that may experience the wrath of the national body of ASUU over non-payment of the new salary. AAUE is out of that, courtesy of our dear Governor,” she said.
The Vice-Chancellor also expressed appreciation to journalists in Edo State for their support and reportage of the university's activities, particularly during what she described as the institution's “dark days” under the controversial Special Intervention Team (SIT).
“Mr Chairman, I want to, through you, thank all our friends in the media for standing with us at AAU, Ekpoma. Your reportage saw us through our dark days of the obnoxious SIT. We look forward to having a better and mutually beneficial working relationship with you,” she said.
Responding, the Edo State NUJ Chairman, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, thanked the Vice-Chancellor and her team for the visit and urged the university management to take advantage of the presence of a former NUJ chairman in its employment to strengthen its relationship with the media.
Alenkhe assured the university of the NUJ's readiness to project its achievements, stressing that AAUE was a collective heritage of the people and should be supported by all stakeholders.
The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Andrew Eromonsele; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Osagie Ekhator; Registrar, Mrs. Oluwayomi Omolegho Agbebaku; Acting Bursar, Dr. Taiwo Agbaje; PAR/VCO, Dr. Mrs. Fedelia Omokhomion; and PAR/Head, Information, Protocol and Public Relations, Otunba Mike Aladenika.
